The nude is one of the oldest subjects in art, and every student of the Academy in Leningrad learned to draw the human figure from life. Ivan's nudes are not about display. They are about the essence of a woman: her strength, her quiet, and the vulnerability of being seen without defences. He painted them with tenderness and respect.
