THE GLADIATOR 1957

Oil on Canvas

Painted in 1957 when Ivan was living in the USA. This painting is a study of strength and power and the constant struggle for survival. This was during the period of the great Soviet Menace and as seen in the USA, a constant threat that Ivan appreciated. He was, after all, a Russian refugee. He had just been through the War in Europe and knew how delicate the concept of freedom was.

The perspective is from the downed Gladiator and not the attacker which emphasizes the feeling of the artist of being under threat again.

The Gladiator represents the United States, the symbol of authority being the helmet, cast aside on the ground. The sword of the attacker coming to bear on the shield represents the Soviet Union.

Viewing the Piece

The viewer should notice the strength and determination of the Gladiator. Look at the eyes and the defiance. The gladiator holds back the attacker from the ground, the veins on his hands defining the strength and purpose to repel the attacker. Every muscle strained but strong. The cartoon-like features of the face emphasize a Hero like character and immediately we place our support for the gladiator and not the attacker. We know who the good guy is just from that look. We also know that the gladiator will win back the day as there is not one glimpse of defeat in his posture or face.

Note that Ivan’s work is about character and strength and his ability to portray these characteristics make this an important piece and not just a picture of a downed gladiator.
