Ivan Garikow Gallery

The Gladiator

Oil on Canvas

Completed in 1957 when Ivan was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this piece is an example of extremes--extreme strength, extreme emotion, and extreme struggle. This painting was completed during that period in the United States when the Soviet Union was a menace and a direct threat to America.

Our perspective is one from the Gladiator, not the attacker, which may indicate artist Ivan may have felt threatened again. There is an obvious struggle for survival present. Notice the strength and determination of the Gladiator. He holds back the attacker while on the ground. Every muscle is strained but holding strong.

The cartoon-like features of the face exaggerate our character. Whether it is symbolic of the United States' cold war with the Soviet Union or simply a battle of two warriors, Ivan's ability to express such characterizations makes this an extremely important painting in Ivan's collection.

This canvas shows how much Ivan's life and perspective had changed. From being a victim for so many years to becoming an optimistic survivor, this painting is about character and strength.
