Ivan Garikow Gallery

Salzburg Lady

Oil on Canvas

In 1948, the war was over and Europe was recovering from cities in ruin. Although memories of the concentration camp still remained etched deeply in his mind, Ivan began to live the life of a free man. This time of his life became his finest years. Ivan painted freely and spiritedly. Soon, he gained local recognition and his artwork was in demand. Ivan's career flourished. His work reflected optimism - a period of better times and hopes of a prosperous future.

Ivan was introduced to an attractive young model named Lilli, and he was immediately captured by her beauty. He decided to paint her outside on the street rather than in the studio in order to capture the natural light and daytime color. He painted her portrait on a street in Salzburg; ironically, times were so difficult that the clothing worn for the portrait had to be borrowed from a local store. His Open Air' studio drew much attention and Ivan became a local legend.

Interestingly, Ivan painted Lilli with blonde hair and blue eyes when in reality she was dark haired with brown eyes. This painting marked a significant change in attitude for Ivan. He was enjoying life. Optimistic for perhaps the first time, Ivan believed that the human spirit could rise above life's challenges.

Love was in the air and in Ivan's heart. He painted Lilli with an air of innocence, a dab of perfection and a captivating youthful appearance. It was Ivan's defining moment. This portrait has become his most recognized painting. Soon after this portrait was finished, Lilli became Ivan's wife.
