Beauty of the Movies
Oil on Canvas
This painting is a portrait of Ginny Simms, an MGM featured singer and actress during the 1940's war era. She was the sweetheart of many an American soldier, but her career ended suddenly when she refused a marriage proposal from an MGM executive who, as the story goes, immediately cancelled her contract and her stardom faded quickly.
The painting represents female perfection. She had a dazzling smile and her high cheekbones gave us the look of not only an incredible beauty but also a peek of perfection. Ivan identified with Ginny Simms. It is said that she reminded him of his lost love and wife Lilli. Ivan had intended to present this portrait to Ginny in person, but he loved the work so much that he could not part with it. He kept it in prominent view until his death - a reminder of the love he had lost.
The overall quality and the attention to detail in this painting further reinforce Garikow's artistic distinction. Ivan's ability to create a painting so warm, soft and lovely in spite of his personal turmoil is proof of his renowned artistic ability.
When we stumble on perfection we often ponder whether perfection in the human form really exists, or is it merely an illusion we actively seek and embrace wholeheartedly. Imagine a moment in your life when you beheld beauty, be it the likes of Cleopatra or Helen of Troy, there is where you will find Ivan.
Can Ivan be making a statement that although we ideally seek perfection, it is only through a still life that it can exist?
