Oil on Canvas
This painting depicts the evil that men do, and the evil that lives deep within a man's soul. From the classic novel, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Scrooge sits very much alone as he is about to be visited by the ghost of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley.
Ebenezer's blood red jacket surrounds him as he leans sideways from the old worn and battered chair. With worry beads in hand, he foreshadows the troublesome events that lie before him. There is an abundance of darkness in this painting which fully captures the essence of Ebenezer's life.
The face is illuminated by the ghostly light of his old friend, Jacob. Although it might appear to bring some comfort to this wicked man, his nervous smile and foreboding eyes indicate the uneasiness which is about to overtake him. Ebenezer's sinister facial expression may have been inspired by the painful reminder of the evil Camp Commandant at the Mauthausen concentration camp which held Ivan prisoner.
In the end, Marley warns us that unresolved issues and the sins of our lifetime follow us beyond the grave and leave us unloved, alone and forgotten.
